Current stakeholders and members of the Illinois Alliance for Clean Transportation at its annual Green Drives Conference and Expo in May 2024, one of the largest clean-transportation conferences in the Midwest for government officials, commercial and municipal fleet managers, corporate sustainability officers, and clean-tech and clean-energy professionals.
The Illinois Alliance for Clean Transportation (IACT) celebrated 30 years on May 13, 2024. Founded in 1994 as the Chicago Area Clean Cities, it was the 5th Clean Cities coalition initiated under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Clean Cities program (rebranded Clean Cities and Communities this year), adding to the existing 75+ coalitions nationwide.
In 2022, CACC expanded to include the entire state of Illinois, changing its name to the Illinois Alliance for Clean Transportation.
IACT is a unique collaboration of businesses and governmental agencies from every corner of the State of Illinois. It partners with private enterprises, educational and research institutions, fuel providers, utilities, environmental organizations, and more. Through these partnerships, it has been successful in promoting the use of zero-emission and low-emission vehicles, recognizing this as the most effective way to safeguard our planet and protect communities from harmful emissions.
IACT’s mission is to enhance the energy, economic, and environmental security of the U.S. by reducing petroleum consumption. IACT achieves this reduction locally through the following actions:
- Coordinating efforts to secure funding for clean fuel and petroleum displacement projects
- Initiating and supporting legislation and programs that promote clean fuels, clean fuel vehicles, idle reduction, enhanced fuel economy, and other clean technologies
- Developing fueling infrastructure in Illinois to support a diverse clean fuel market
- Educating the public on the operation and benefits of clean fuels and technologies
- Integrating as many clean-fuel vehicles as possible across Illinois
IACT’s highly dedicated and committed team members drive its award-winning achievements, sustained growth, and ongoing success in Illinois. The team comprises individuals from corporations, small businesses, government agencies, and commercial and municipal fleets. With support from both the state and federal governments and its partners, IACT has displaced over 200 million gasoline-gallon equivalents of petroleum; reduced more than 159,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions; assisted stakeholders in using +13,000 alternative fuel, electric, and hybrid vehicles; and helped facilitate approximately 1,700 new electric vehicle charging stations in the Chicago area.
