Equitable Mobility Powering Opportunities for Workplace Electrification Readiness (EMPOWER)

Researchers increasingly view hydrogen—the universe's most abundant element—as a promising carbon-free fuel source for the future. Hydrogen has the potential to power commercial vehicles, ships, planes, and industrial applications without harming the environment. However, achieving this vision requires the establishment of a robust nationwide hydrogen network.

The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, a coalition of states including Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, is proud to announce its selection as one of seven national hubs entering negotiations with the U.S. Department of Energy for up to $750 million in funding. This award supports the production, distribution, and use of clean hydrogen.

Our Goals

  • Produce Clean Hydrogen: Focus on generating predominantly zero-emission green and pink hydrogen.
  • Utilize Existing Infrastructure: Reuse and revitalize significant pipeline networks in a formerly industrialized, densely populated region.
  • Create Quality Jobs: Generate and retain over 20,000 well-paying jobs, including union positions, while establishing a talent pipeline for the clean energy sector.
  • Advance Equity and Health: Deliver economic opportunities and health benefits directly to disadvantaged communities, aligning with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative.
